Members from our lab was shortlisted as a finalist at the inaugural Rolls-Royce Data Innovation Challenge – Asia, the only one representing Hong Kong. They pitched their idea against the other finalists in Singapore on March 1, 2019. We offered a novel flight scheduler model that combined weather data (e.g., pressure, temperature, wind speed, and wind direction) and aircraft type data to accurately predict the takeoff and landing separation times. Our solution would help optimize flight schedules and improve airport utilization, benefiting airlines, airport authorities, and most importantly passengers.
